You Have Permission

Do you know who you are, I mean REALLY know your AUTHENTIC-self?

The “YOU” that was there before the world told you how to behave?

Before the labels, before the masks.

Until I gave myself permission to go on a journey of self-discovery,

I found safety in the idea of who the world thought I should be.

I tried to mimic the perfect woman, wife, mother, daughter, friend, pretending to be whoever I thought would make the people around me happy.

I desired to be loved, to be known, and to have authentic connections,

but I hid from true-myself, trying to create the person (any person) I thought could  be accepted, the one that was enough and yet not too much, someone worthy of love.

I tried on every mask and became whoever the world told me to be.

I closed myself off so I could fit into the box that defined who I was supposed to be.

The box felt safe because I understood the boundaries required for me to be

accepted and loved.

Slowly, I began to notice a tension building deep inside of me causing me to be uncomfortable in my own skin. The tension increased in intensity as I became more aware of the vast difference between my authentic self and the person I was reflecting to the world. The very box, that at one time brought me so much comfort because I understood exactly who I needed to be for the world to accept and love me,

began to enclose around me causing it to be hard for me to breathe.

The box was no longer just a box it had become a prison of walls entrapping me preventing me from the authentic connections I so desired.

When there is a gap in between the person we present to the world and our authentic-self, it is impossible to for us to align (or feel) with peace and happiness.

The tension will continue to build.

If left untouched, eventually, you will either implode or explode leaving behind carnal wreckage that might include consequences that can

change the trajectory of the rest of your life.

You can prevent the implosion and/or explosion by recognizing the tension as it builds… giving yourself permission to unravel, throwing off every version of yourself

until you uncover your true-self.

This is one of my favorite quotes personal transformation… because it is so true!

“I’ve never seen any life transformation that didn’t begin with the person in question finally getting tired of their own bullshit.” -Elizabeth Gilbert.

If you really want to know the truest part of yourself get fed up with every other version and shake off every other version you have created.

Self-discovery is the process of peeling back the layers, knocking down the walls, breaking out of the box that enslaves us, and learning who we really are.

The first step in self-discovery is giving yourself permission.

Do you need permission? Not really.

You are in control of who you are…

However, most of the time granting ourselves permission is a required to start the process because up until this point the world has screamed who you are supposed to be,

drowning out your inner voice that guides you to your authentic self.

Permission.

Consent. Authorization. An official document giving you authorization.

Brene Brown is one of my favorite authors and speakers.

She often shares her story of the power of a permission slip.

“I wrote my first permission slip on a Post-it note the morning I met Oprah Winfrey for the first time and taped an episode of Super Soul Sunday, it said,

“Permission to be excited, have fun, and be goofy.”

Now my jeans pockets are often stuffed with permission slips.”

-Brene Brown

A permission slip can be a sticky note, a piece of art, a scribble on a piece of scrap paper, an official document, a whisper, a scream, it can be almost anything.

The point is giving yourself permission to discover your authentic self is your first-step to taking back your power!

What should your permission slip say? It’s really up to you!

You can write as many permission slips you need to convince yourself that you CAN and SHOULD allow yourself to shed the layers you have used to cover up your authentic self so you can align to peace and joy.

Maybe your first permission slip will say something like…

I, ________, give myself permission to take the next step on

my journey of self-discovery.

Literally write it on a piece of paper, create something beautiful out of it, scream it into the starry sky, do whatever best resonates to your soul.

Display your permission slip, somewhere that you will see it every day as a reminder that you have permission to go on this journey!

After your first permission slip, keep it going!

When you give yourself permission to _______, (anything).

It is a powerful experience!

It’s an action rooted in love and compassion for yourself,

instead of the “should-haves,” “could-haves,” guilt, fear, or shame we are used to settling for!

When writing yourself a permission slip, remember to use powerful and clear language. Don’t use negative statements or be wishy-washy.

Empower yourself.
